Lyrical Rhetoric - Follow-up

After reviewing your notes, briefly comment on a couple of your classmates' songs we listened to in class.

Make sure you cover these questions:

Which songs interested you the most? Why?

Which songs prompted the most interesting discussions for you?

In your mind, which song had the most effective argument? What strengths can you list from that argument? What could be improved?

  1. I personally liked the sound of the song "The General" the most because it was kind of hopeful and uplifting. I enjoyed discussing the song about abortion, because I didn't fully understand it; it wasn't clear cut as to what stance they were taking, and talking about it helped me to understand what the writer's meaning was. The song I considered the most effective was "Strange Fruit" because it left such a vivid picture in my mind, it made excellent comparisons, and the overall sound matched the lyrics extremely well.

  2. After hearing all the songs I think the song that interested me the most was The General, By The Dispatch because I have heard that song hundreds of times and after listening to it, looking at the lyrics, and discussing it in class you start to develop a new perspective on the song and start realizing what message the artist is trying to deliver. The song that had the most interesting discussion was the song the Great Debate, by Dream Theater because no one truly understood if the artist was for or against Steam cell research and abortion. I believe since the artist didn’t come out and directly say what their side was sparked a great discussion in class because everyone had to try to develop a theory and decode the lyrics to find what was really going on. The song that I thought had the most effective argument was the song If You’re Out There, by John Legend I believe it presented the best argument because it encouraged people to not sit back and wait for the government to create change but to ask you to create change for the future. The only things I might improve about the song is to make sure that the song addresses the world to create change not just our country.
